Are You Losing Out on Search Traffic?
If you’re not aware of mobile website design or responsive website design then it may be that you are not familiar with Google’s new policy to promote sites with mobile / responsive optimisation in their mobile search results. That’s right. We’ll get into what that means to you in a second, but first let’s hear it from the horse’s lips.
On April 21, 2015 Google announced the new update to their mobile search algorithm by saying:
“Today’s the day we begin globally rolling out our mobile-friendly update. We’re boosting the ranking of mobile-friendly pages on mobile search results. Now searchers can more easily find high-quality and relevant results where text is readable without tapping or zooming, tap targets are spaced appropriately, and the page avoids unplayable content or horizontal scrolling.”
What This Means to You
According to Google’s announcement, “If your site’s pages aren’t mobile-friendly, there may be a significant decrease in mobile traffic from Google Search. But have no fear, once your site becomes mobile-friendly, we will automatically re-process (i.e., crawl and index) your pages.”
In plain English, this means that if you do not have a mobile or a responsive website, you are certainly missing out on search traffic, because the majority of smart phone users search the internet now through their phones. If your site is not optimised for mobile devices either through a separate mobile-friendly site or a single responsive website, then your search listing will be pushed down on the results when people search for your products or services on their mobile devices.
However, like they mentioned, once you do upgrade your site your rankings will improve. If you haven’t gotten on board the mobile revolution yet, then now may be a good time to get in touch with a mobile website design company. At RWC, we create responsive websites that cater to mobiles, tablets and desktops. This is a preferred method as users will not be redirected to another mobile friendly site, but can instead to continue to browse the same site with a different layout.
If you’re not sure yet whether your site complies with Google’s requirements for mobile search listing, you can always check it out on their free online tool right here: https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/mobile-friendly/
